Calligraphers write words.

Painters draw pictures.

Photographers take photos.

What if calligraphers draw pictures?

I donft want to be restricted to categories.

Fukuda Shoshu (1958- ) is a professional calligrapher/artist from Kyoto, Japan.

He also works as a (logo) designer (see the section on gf. shoshu Art-Officeh).

He has organised and held a number of exhibitions in and out of Japan.
His recent exhibitions include a private show at the Heilongjiang Art Gallery, Harbin, China,
which keeps a couple of his works in its permanent collection,
and a group exhibition at Gallery Misuya, Kyoto, held in August and October 2001 respectively.
Several exhibitions are scheduled to take place in 2002.
He is a recipient of numerous prizes, including the grand prize for the calligraphy section
at the 1990 International Exposition of Calligraphy and Art held in Beijing, China.

His calligraphic works are noted for the unique effect of an original sumi ink, which he prepares.
Like a potter, who never knows how his work will turn out until it is baked and taken out of a kiln,
Shoshu lets nature take its own course to finalise his work,
as particles in the ink move around and leave their etracesf on a paper once they leave his hand.

After going through the eordinaryf path of calligraphic training,
Shoshu left the conservative calligraphy world, questioning its structure and practice.
While he attempts to free himself from the etraditionalistsf, he turns to the Chinese classics for legitimacy.
Although his calligraphic works are based on etraditionf,
Shoshu continues to seek his own way of expression in order to create innovative works.

Shoshu is also known for his photographic works.
His photographic career is marked by his earlier series of black and white gelatine silver prints,
and recently by both colour and monochrome digital images.
His latest works are an experimentation to integrate his twoefieldsf- calligraphy and photography.
He scans various effects of ink on a piece of paper, and arranges them to combine with his digital photographic works.
